Emergency Preparedness Training Program

Led by experienced emergency and facility professionals from our libraries and UF, these sessions emphasize situational awareness, effective communication, and swift decision-making to mitigate risks and ensure a coordinated response. We have designed these to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively respond to a wide range of emergency situations, including natural disasters like hurricanes to flooding, fires, or active assailant incidents. Join us to learn key protocols and strategies for safeguarding your team, library resources, and patrons.

Workshops with a * are required for new hires, all other are optional.

Emergencies*

The primary objective of this session is to provide library employees with an overview of the Libraries procedures for emergencies. Topics covered include: 

  • Your role in the event of an emergency
  • Who your Building Emergency Coordinator is
  • Who your Area Supervisor is
  • Where to find additional resources and training for emergencies 

Hurricanes*

The primary objective of Emergency Preparedness training is to provide library employees with an overview of the Libraries procedures for emergency and disaster preparedness. Topics covered include:

Educator

Peter Miller is Director of the Facilities Planning and Security Department at the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida. With a departmental goal to provide the best possible work environment for employees and patrons, the department is responsible for all facility planning, construction, maintenance, security, signage, accountable property, office supply distribution, and the system-wide mail and courier service for our libraries. Peter has been with Smathers Libraries for over 16 years, beginning as a supply clerk in 2007. He holds B.A. degrees in English and in Broadcasting from Flagler College, St. Augustine, FL.
